Stewart Island

After a rainy introduction to Stewart Island Friday night, Saturday cooperated with perfect weather for a five-hour tramp to Ryan's Creek and Kaipipi Bay (pictured above).
Oban is the only town on Stewart Island but it has several bays harboring sailboats, water taxis, and fishing vessels.

Sue and I stepped onto a deserted beach on Ulva Island thinking we had discovered a pair of the elusive Kiwi birds. We were duped. These are the far more common Weka, described as "cheeky" because of their tendency to invade your lunch.
